About Metal Braces

Metal braces are the standard form of orthodontic treatment that you’re probably most familiar with. These braces are cemented onto a patient’s teeth and will gradually shift his or her teeth over time. They’re not only utilized for straightening teeth though; braces are also capable of treating malocclusions (bad bites) that include overbites, underbites, and various other jaw abnormalities. The treatment time will vary, depending on the severity of the case, however, the average time most patients will end up wearing their braces is about two years. Modern metal braces are now lighter, smaller, more durable, and even come with the ability to personalize your own braces with band bracket color options.

Modern metal braces are typically made out of stainless steel and are comprised of these parts:

  • Brackets – These are cemented to the fronts of the patient’s teeth.
  • Archwire – This thin wire runs through each of the metal brackets and puts pressure on the teeth in order to guide them into their proper place.
  • Elastics or Rubber Bands – These are colored ties that are used to hold the archwires to the brackets.

Some of the benefits of choosing metal braces include the following:

  • Metal braces are a time-proven method of shifting a patient’s teeth into proper alignment.
  • They’re better at treating more complicated orthodontic problems than other forms of treatment.
  • Metal braces generally offer a quicker treatment time.
  • Since they’re cemented onto your teeth, you’ll never have to worry about forgetting to wear them.
  • They’re less expensive than other treatment options.

RE: COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

To our valued patients,

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), President Trump, the American Dental Association and the Hawaii Dental Association are recommending all dentists postpone nonemergency dental procedures for 2 weeks. Our practice is committed to protecting the community and avoiding using valuable resources that our first responders and frontline healthcare providers will need.

Our office will be closed effective today, Wednesday, March 18, and we plan to resume regular hours on Wednesday, April 1. If you are experiencing a true dental emergency including swelling or severe tooth pain, please call your general dentist office, and listen closely as emergency contact info will be available. For all nonemergent questions, please email us at [email protected].

We are so sorry for the burden this places on your schedules, but your continued health and safety are our number one priority. Our office is working diligently to reschedule all patients with existing appointments within the next 2 weeks. We will continue to evaluate the situation as it evolves and determine on a weekly basis when it is appropriate for us to return to normal orthodontic patient care. We ask for your compassion and understanding at this time as we all work together to keep Hawaii healthy.

Sincerely,

Your Morita Orthodontics Ohana
