Invisalign vs. Braces in Honolulu

Here at Morita Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on exceptional orthodontic service. We proudly serve families in and around Aiea, Kapolei and Honolulu, Hawaii. Today, as orthodontic technology becomes more advanced the actual treatment is simple, convenient and affordable for all of our patients. An attractive and healthy smile is just one of the many benefits of starting orthodontic treatment as an adolescent or adult. Our Honolulu orthodontists offer both Invisalign and braces to our Aiea patients because there is not one treatment that will fit all patients. In fact, Invisalign and braces do have specific advantages and disadvantages associated with each treatment.

The Traditional Way: Braces

The Traditional Way: BracesMetal braces are the traditional and time-tested form of orthodontic treatment. To give patients a straighter smile, our braces use metal brackets that are cemented to the front of your teeth along with a wire that runs through them to gently guide the teeth into better positions. We believe these are the most important pros and cons when choosing Aiea braces:

Advantages of Braces

  • Braces are incredibly effective and able to treat some of the most complex orthodontic problems
  • You won’t have to worry about remembering to wear them as they’re cemented to your teeth
  • Braces are inexpensive compared to other types of orthodontic treatments
  • There are several different types of braces with a few of them offering a more discreet treatment, like ceramic braces (clear braces) or lingual braces

Disadvantages of Braces

  • Metal braces don’t offer the most aesthetically pleasing form of treatment
  • You’ll have to avoid certain foods because they can potentially damage your braces
  • It can be difficult to clean around the brackets and wires, meaning braces care can be more time consuming
  • Metal braces don’t always offer the most comfort to a patient

The More Discrete Method: Invisalign

Invisalign is considered to be the alternative to braces. Instead of using brackets and wires to shift a patient’s teeth, Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners to do the job. Our Honolulu orthodontists believe Invisalign has its own separate pros and cons, as followed:

Advantages of Invisalign

  • Invisalign offers a nearly invisible orthodontic treatment due to its clear aligners
  • Invisalign aligners are removable, meaning you won’t have to stop eating your favorite foods for fear of breaking your orthodontic appliances
  • You won’t have to struggle to clean around wires and brackets when you brush or floss
  • The plastic aligners offer more comfort than a traditional braces treatment.
  • The aligners can act like a night-guard to protect against any nighttime teeth grinding

Disadvantages of Invisalign

  • Not every patient is going to be a suitable candidate for Invisalign in Aiea and Honolulu, as it won’t work on many complex orthodontic problems
  • You must wear your aligners for at least 22 hours per day or else your treatment will not work properly
  • Since they’re not cemented inside your mouth, you have to be careful not to misplace or lose them
  • Invisalign is typically more expensive than metal braces

RE: COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

To our valued patients,

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), President Trump, the American Dental Association and the Hawaii Dental Association are recommending all dentists postpone nonemergency dental procedures for 2 weeks. Our practice is committed to protecting the community and avoiding using valuable resources that our first responders and frontline healthcare providers will need.

Our office will be closed effective today, Wednesday, March 18, and we plan to resume regular hours on Wednesday, April 1. If you are experiencing a true dental emergency including swelling or severe tooth pain, please call your general dentist office, and listen closely as emergency contact info will be available. For all nonemergent questions, please email us at [email protected].

We are so sorry for the burden this places on your schedules, but your continued health and safety are our number one priority. Our office is working diligently to reschedule all patients with existing appointments within the next 2 weeks. We will continue to evaluate the situation as it evolves and determine on a weekly basis when it is appropriate for us to return to normal orthodontic patient care. We ask for your compassion and understanding at this time as we all work together to keep Hawaii healthy.

Sincerely,

Your Morita Orthodontics Ohana
